This thing has been noticed that the economic downturn has made many Americans jobless but during the phase of being jobless and struggling to get a one not only the financial conditions get bad but the mental health may get stuck in too many illnesses like depression and anxiety.
Surveys have been conducted by Mental Health America and many other researchers and the results are almost similar, the people facing bad economic conditions are at higher risks of getting mental illnesses and the most common among them are the depression and anxiety.
The American government is not quiet at this issue but they are bringing many reliefs for these people to cut the rate of mental illnesses, the government is providing federal stimulus, jobs bills and unemployment benefits extensions that are effectively helping the people to fight with their economic conditions.
David L. Shern, president and chief executive of Mental Health America is doing some significant actions for the betterment of mental health of Americans and according to him “We need to make sure we provide adequate social safety nets so that, although they will have their life strategy disrupted, their ability to meet basic needs will continue”.
During the surveys this thing was found mainly that the unemployed people are four times more likely to think of harming themselves and are twice likely to report substance or alcohol abuse.
Dr. Nada Stotland, a psychiatry professor at Rush Medical College in Chicago while discussing about the mental health of many Americans said that “They’re just very, very discouraged. They have trouble sleeping. They may have trouble eating, or they may stuff their mouths with whatever’s flying past.”
Thus the unemployment should have to be vanished otherwise the mental health may consistently get affected of people. Being optimistic is the best quality that can keep you away from mental problems so the jobless people should not lose hearts and wait for the good times.
